How Should You Prioritize Your House?

How Should You Prioritize Your House - Image 1We all know – or at least should know – that air leaks in your house are bad. Nice conditioned (paid for) air escapes and gross, unconditioned air sneaks in. Usually, when there is one air leak there are many! So, how do we decide which leaks take priority?

THE ABC SYSTEM

We at Complete Home Solutions, as a Dr. Energy Saver Dealer, use a system we call the ABC System. This helps us to decide which leaks we should be paying the most attention to in the house.

  1. This stands for “attic.” Air leaks in the attic are the number one priority. The top of the house is actually where the most air leaks out. If you have a budget and aren’t sure where to spend your money, the attic is definitely where you want to start.
  2. This stands for “bottom.” The bottoms can refer to either the basement or the crawl space. This is where most of the air from outside flows into the house. After the attic, this is the next area that you want to get sealed up.
  3. This stands for “conditioned space.” The majority of doors and windows are located in your conditioned space and can contribute to you losing your “good” air. After you’ve gotten your attic and basement air sealed, this is the next place that you would want to get done.

WHEN TO GET IT DONE

The worst times for a leaky house are when there’s extreme weather – i.e. summer and winter. Of course, you can get work done on your house anytime during the year. However, getting it done before summer or winter kicks in is ideal. We’re starting to get deep into winter now and you do not want that bone-chilling wind creeping up in your house while your nice hot air floods out.
