This house in Millersville, Maryland was having a hard time keeping all of its rooms a constant temperature. The upstairs would be hot while the downstairs would be freezing. The homeowner heard that there were companies who fixed these kinds of problems and among them he found Complete Home Solutions. Our auditor won him over with his attention to detail and ability to explain things in understandable terms. 

Once there, we discovered that his crawl space was not up to snuff. There was no air sealing, no vapor barrier, and the duct work was left exposed. All of these things were contributing to the homeowner's discomfort. We fixed these problems by sealing off all openings in the crawl with polysio foam board and spray foam/caulk, installing a 6 mil vapor barrier, and insulating the duct work with spray foam. Now that he has a crawl space has stopped letting cold air flood in, the homeowner can enjoy a comfortable temperature no matter where he is in his house.

A lack of air sealing and not enough insulation is a bad combination that you, and your house, will suffer from. This client in Millersville, Maryland was worried about how their house was going to hold up this summer. They remembered last summer was excruciatingly hot and they could not get their house to cool down. This year, they wanted to be able to escape the heat, so they called up Complete Home Solutions to see what we could do.

We gave her an energy audit to find out where her big problem areas were. We found the attic to be a major issue. There was hardly any insulation, no air sealing, and there were ducts left completely uncovered. The attic itself is bad enough because it allows for all of this hot air to leak out into the house during the summer when it gets hot. The ducts are even worse because they get HOT up in that attic and all of that cold air that you're trying to pump through your house heats up as it passes through. So, not only is your house not staying cool, but you're wasting money trying to cool it down.

We do a few things to help a problem like this. First, we want to treat the ducts. We did this by covering them with closed cell cellulose spray foam. We then constructed an insulation dam around it so that the homeowner can still get to them if they need to. Next, we want to air seal the attic itself. We sealed off any nooks and crannies in the attic with foam board and caulk. Finally, we applied cellulose insulation. Now our client can look forward to a cool, relaxing summer and not worry about the blasting heat.

Hello, my husband and I bought a house in July in Millersville, and a few weeks ago (the first time it dropped below 50 overnight) we woke up to pools of condensation every few feet bubbling through the new ceiling paint in our master bedroom and bathroom, dripping onto the floor and running down the wall. There's about 3' of blown-in insulation in the attic, but it appears the skylights are not insulated and we suspect further ventilation issues (there's an attic fan but we can't tell if it's functional, and there's no ventilation at the ends of the attic). We also believe the previous owners had this problem before and concealed it during the sale. We're concerned about mold and hidden previous water damage in the attic or the walls, and would like to set up a time for someone to come look into it.
