Attic Without Any Work Done
This was the attic that was causing those cold walls and floors. Without any air sealing or insulation, your attic will leak your hot air right up and out of the house. This will cost you a lot of energy and money.
Attic Ducts Left Exposed
The duct work in this house is in the attic and unsealed. This means that the air that you're paying to heat and cool is leaking right out of your house. Luckily, we know how to fix this.
Air Sealed Duct Work
We air sealed and insulated the ducts with 1" of closed cell spray foam. This will make sure that the heated air is actually going where the homeowner wants it to go.
Air Sealed Attic Cavities
The duct work wasn't the only thing that needed ceiling. Any cavities or penetrations in the attic allows heat to escape. In this picture, we solved that problem by applying sections of polysio foam board and sealing them with caulk.
Blown-In Cellulose Insulation
After air sealing, the next big step is to install insulation. We brought this attic's insulation levels up to R-49 (approximately 16"), which is the recommended level for our climate zone.
Insulation Dam Around Ducts
Although we air sealed the ducts, the homeowner may still need to have access to them for maintenance purposes. That is why we constructed this insulation dam around the duct work.
Attic Tent Cover
The entrance to the attic can also be a problem as it is such a large area. In order to properly form a thermal barrier, we installed an attic tent cover over the opening.
This homeowner lives with her husband in her 1950s house over in Deale, Maryland. For an older house, it has held up pretty well, but the walls and floors are always cold.
