Foam insulation is a great tool that has been taking the home performance industry by storm. This particular product comes in different forms, but we want to specifically talk about one that we like to use and see some great results with: closed-cell spray foam.
WHAT IS IT
Closed-cell spray foam is a “spray polyurethane foam” composed of two different ingredients. Those ingredients are mixed together on site by using special equipment hooked up in the back of our truck. We then use a mixing gun to spray the chemicals onto the needed surface. Once the liquid mixture has been applied, it will foam, expand, and eventually harden, creating an airtight barrier for your home.
(1) Air Sealer and Insulator
You basically get a two-for-one deal with this product, which is one of the reasons why it is so great. It is able to both air seal and insulate because of its expansive nature. The foam spreads to cover any gaps, cracks, openings, etc. that could be allowing for air leakage. This forms an airtight seal that the homeowners will love when it comes time to pay that energy bill at the end of the month. On top of that, this spray foam has an R-value of about R-7 per inch, which is the highest rank on the market today.
(2) Moisture Barrier
This type of insulation is also impermeable to water. This gives you two main benefits. You won’t have to worry about water or moisture leaking/evaporating into the area. As we all know, moisture is generally not a good thing; it can lead to structural failure, mold and mildew, and electrical issues. The less of it there is, the better off you’ll be. You can also rest assured that if something unexpected happens – such as flooding or a crack in the roof – the spray foam won’t be damaged from absorbing the water the way that other types of insulation would be.
(3) Mold Deterrent
Since the foam is water resistant and provides no food source for mold or bacteria to form, your house will be better protected against mold and mildew (this is always a definite plus).
(4) Quick, but Long Lasting
Spray foam insulation, compared to many other forms of insulation, takes significantly less time to install. Once it has been installed and sets, the spray foam will be secure and effective for years to come. It won’t shift or fall out of place. This one time investment will work to save you money for the next 20 years, at least.
(5) Environmentally Friendly
Ultimately, spray foam is helping the environment. When you have a product that effectively lasts for as long as this one does, you don’t need to create as many consumed materials. What’s more, you are now producing a much more energy efficient house.
So far, there doesn’t seem to be too many downsides to this product. If you want this kind of superior insulation in your home, all you need is a superior company to install it.
